Office Building Access Control: Best Practices for Property Managers
Tailgating, lost fobs and after-hours gaps — practical access control habits that keep towers secure without frustrating tenants.
Tailgating is the real perimeter breach
Most unauthorized entries don't defeat the card reader — they follow someone through it. Trained lobby staff who greet and screen visitors, combined with anti-passback rules and tenant education, close the gap that hardware alone leaves open.
Manage credentials like inventory
Every fob should have an owner, an expiry and an audit trail. Deactivate credentials the day tenants or employees depart, audit active cards quarterly, and treat master keys with signed custody logs. Credential hygiene is unglamorous and stops more incidents than any camera.
After hours is when it matters
Evenings and weekends are when towers are emptiest and incidents costliest. Defined lock-up procedures, verified evening patrols, contractor sign-in rules and a staffed or monitored lobby turn the building's quietest hours from its weakest into its most controlled.
