Campus Security: A Semester-Ready Checklist for Canadian Colleges and Universities
September brings hundred-thousand-student surges back to Canadian campuses. The security groundwork to lay before orientation week.
The September surge is predictable — prepare for it
Orientation week concentrates crowds, alcohol, emotions and strangers into a few days. Staffing plans, event coverage, residence access control and parking patrols should be contracted and briefed by mid-August, not assembled during move-in weekend.
Vetting matters more on campus
Campus guards work around minors, vulnerable students and residences. Beyond provincial licensing, require enhanced background checks, safeguarding awareness training and a clear conduct standard. Approachability is a security feature: students report problems to guards they trust.
Cover the quiet hours
Libraries at midnight, parkades after evening classes, residences on long weekends — incident patterns cluster in low-traffic windows. Verified overnight patrols with documented checkpoints protect students and give administrators defensible records when something does happen.
